How to Win at an Auction
Posted On: November 1, 2019 by Backes Auctioneers in: Auctions
One of the biggest insecurities many people have when coming to an auction is the ability to win the items they want. With all of the items, people, bidding and excitement, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. Today, you can lay your fears to rest because Backes Auctioneers has some tips and tricks to make sure you win everything you have your eyes on.
First Things First
Before you even start bidding, there are a few things you need to do. First and foremost, decide what items you are wanting to purchase. Knowing exactly what you need or are willing to buy will help with future steps. If you’re able to, walk around and inspect the items you are thinking about purchasing. Sometimes, there can be damage such as rust or dents that may impact how much you are willing to spend. Finally, set your top bid price for each item. By having a price limit for each item, you can prevent overpaying or destroying your budget.
Strategies for Winning Your Bid
Make your bid loud and clear. This is no time to be standoffish. The auctioneer needs to see and/or hear you so they know you are interested in the item.
Consider going low. Sometimes, you may be able to place a low bid before the auctioneer even finishes talking about the item. By raising your bidding card early, you let the auction house know you will take the item if no one outbids you.
Teamwork makes the dream work. Some people utilize a team effort in order to win a bid. If you choose this strategy, make sure everyone is clear on who will bid and what the stopping point will be. Also, be wary of the potential to bid against each other. You don’t want to raise the buying price!
Be ready to pounce. Whether it is a big-ticket item or just something you have your eye on, sometimes placing a last-minute bid can help you win. Other people may have hit their spend limits towards the end of the session or have already gone over budget with other items. Either way, their loss is your gain!
No matter what item you hope to buy, there are many ways you can go about winning your bid. Whether it’s a team effort or you’re going solo, we hope these tips and tricks help you get everything you want at your next auction.
